Beşiktaş Beats Midtjylland Away to Advance; Both Head Coaches Speak Out

Beşiktaş defeated Midtjylland 2-0 away in the second leg of the UEFA Europa League 2nd qualifying round, securing their place in the next round. Speaking after the match, Beşiktaş head coach Vincenzo Italiano said he was extremely pleased with the result, emphasizing that getting a win here was by no means easy. Italiano noted that they struggled under the opponent's pressure in the first half but dominated the game in the second half, adding that keeping a clean sheet in both matches was a detail that particularly pleased him.

The Italian coach explained that due to their advantage from the first leg, they avoided taking unnecessary risks in the return match, especially in the first half, and that the game was decided once they scored in the second half. Italiano stated that they had prepared well and took to the pitch in line with this plan, adding that their main goal was to advance and that he was happy they had achieved it. The coach also noted that since they are currently competing in only one competition, they play just one match a week, and therefore he rewarded the players who had stood out with their performances the previous week by fielding them in this match. He emphasized that during periods when competing in three different competitions, more rotation would be needed.

Midtjylland's head coach Mike Tullberg, whose team was eliminated, said that playing a total of 110 minutes with ten men across both matches made advancing virtually impossible. Responding to a question about the red card shown to Martin Erlic, he acknowledged that his player had made a wrong decision on the pitch, but said he felt the need to defend him somewhat. Tullberg stated that they had experienced serious injury problems since the start of the season, noting that Erlic had only been able to attend one or two training sessions after returning from the World Cup, and that their plans changed due to Lee Han-beom's injury, forcing them to field Erlic.

Tullberg pointed out that players such as Diao and Victor Bak were also injured in their squad, which is why they were forced to field Erlic once again despite him not being physically ready and looking tired. Asked whether his team generally had a problem with cards, the Danish coach said he disagreed, stating that he believed they had not received a single red card in Europe last season. However, when reminded that they had received five red cards in the league last season and two red cards in two Europa League matches this season, he added that one could draw the desired headline from this data, but that he himself would not reach such a conclusion.
