Trabzonspor Defeated by Ferencvaros: Tough Second Leg Awaits in Play-off Round

Trabzonspor suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to Hungarian representative Ferencvaros in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League play-off round. In the match played in front of maroon-blue fans who filled Papara Park, Kristoffer Zachariassen scored the only goal of the game in the 17th minute. In stoppage time, Trabzonspor's Cibuike Nwaiwu was shown a red card for a foul on his opponent, leaving his team with ten men. The decisive second leg will be played on Thursday, August 27, in Hungary.

Head coach Fatih Tekke made five changes to the starting lineup following the 1-1 draw away at Kasımpaşa in the opening week of the league. Savic, Mustafa Eskihellaç, Malinovskyi, Metehan Mimaroğlu, and Aral Şimşir were replaced by Cenk Özkaçar, Cabral, Melih Kabasakal, Mohamed Salah, and Umut Nayir. Okay Yokuşlu and Batagov, who are not on the UEFA list due to injuries, could not be included in the squad, along with Folcarelli, whose treatment is ongoing, while Muçi awaited his turn on the substitutes' bench. The match was also notable as it marked Fatih Tekke's first European cup experience as a head coach.

Trabzonspor's new signing Mohamed Salah started in the lineup wearing the maroon-blue jersey for the first time. The Egyptian star failed to find the net in the 8th minute of the match when he found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. In the following minutes, both he and his teammates continued to strive for a goal; Onuachu's header bounced off the post, while Pina's shot from a narrow angle was parried for a corner by goalkeeper Dibusz. However, despite dominating the game, the maroon-blues could not manage to change the score.

Another notable detail that marked the match occurred in the stands. Young fan Isaac Kearney, who has Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome from birth and previously captured the football world's attention with his affection for Mohamed Salah, walked onto the pitch alongside the Egyptian star before the match to greet the fans. Trabzonspor, who will seek victory in the second leg, must achieve a win by at least a two-goal margin away in Hungary to advance in the competition.
