Beşiktaş part ways with Joao Mario as Portuguese midfielder reportedly heads to AEK

Beşiktaş have officially announced their split from Portuguese midfielder Joao Mario Naval Da Costa Eduardo. In a statement, the club confirmed that the player's contract had been terminated by mutual agreement, thanking him for his efforts and wishing him success in the future. The 33-year-old had been training separately from the squad for some time and was no longer part of the club's plans for the new season.

Joao Mario joined Beşiktaş at the start of the 2024-2025 season and made 45 appearances for the Black-and-Whites, scoring 10 goals during his time at the club. Last season, he was sent out on loan to Greek side AEK Athens, where he impressed with solid performances. With his future at Beşiktaş growing increasingly uncertain, the club ultimately decided to formalize the separation.

According to reports, Joao Mario traveled to Greece immediately after his contract termination to finalize a return move to AEK. The Athens club is reportedly set to offer the experienced player a two-year deal. Greek media reports indicate that AEK intend to use him in central midfield and in the attacking midfield role just behind the strikers.

Reports suggest that AEK coach Marco Nikolic's familiarity with the player played a key role in the transfer decision. Last season, as AEK claimed the Greek league title, Joao Mario made 31 appearances and contributed directly to 5 goals, with 3 goals and 2 assists to his name. That record appears to have reinforced the club's confidence in bringing him back.
