Fenerbahçe advance to the next round despite a tough away trip to Gornik Zabrze

Fenerbahçe faced Gornik Zabrze away from home in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League 2nd qualifying round and left the match with a 1-1 draw. The yellow-and-navy blue side took the lead in the 12th minute through a Talisca penalty, while the home side equalized through a goal by Michal Sacek in first-half stoppage time. Having carried over their advantage from the first leg, Fenerbahçe managed to advance to the next round with this result and learned that their next opponent would be Sturm Graz.

In the match, Fenerbahçe failed to display the performance they had hoped for in the first half, but showed a more dominant and effective display in the second half. Despite chances such as headers from İsmail Yüksek and Talisca, the yellow-and-navy blue side could not find a second goal. Nevertheless, they preserved the result despite the home side's increasing pressure, especially in the closing stages, and left the pitch as the team advancing to the next round. It was also noted that the match was halted for about seven minutes due to smoke caused by flares lit by the home fans.

Head coach İsmail Kartal stated in his post-match remarks that they were unable to display the football they wanted in the first half, but showed a completely different Fenerbahçe in the second half. Kartal emphasized that the opponent never gave up throughout the match and said they would analyze their team's shortcomings and continue to improve. Noting that clarity regarding the health status of important players such as Talisca and Semedo would be determined by the medical team's reports, Kartal asked for the fans' trust.

Defender Nathan Ake expressed his happiness about advancing to the next round, saying that the team's withdrawal after scoring the goal did not reflect their playing identity. Ake stated that they performed better in the second half but struggled to convert the chances they created into goals. Emphasizing that his understanding with Milan Skriniar as a center-back pairing was good, Ake added that they would continue to improve over time, particularly in terms of high pressing.
