Ismail Jakobs announces retirement from Senegal national team
Galatasaray left-back Ismail Jakobs has announced his retirement from the Senegal national team to focus on his club career and family.

Galatasaray's 27-year-old Senegalese left-back Ismail Jakobs has announced the end of his international career. The player shared the decision with fans in an emotional post on his Instagram account. Jakobs explained that he now wants to dedicate himself fully to his club career, calling this moment a significant turning point in his life.

In his statement, the experienced defender said he joined the national team as a young player and is now stepping away as a mature professional. Jakobs described leaving behind unforgettable memories, lifelong friendships and a deep sense of gratitude. Although he grew up in Germany, he said Senegal welcomed him with open arms, allowing him to feel at home in the country very quickly.

Jakobs noted that Senegal gave him the chance to fulfil his childhood dreams. As the son of a Senegalese father, he said it held special meaning to realise not only his own dream but also his father's. From friendlies and qualifiers to the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup, he said he always gave his full effort in every competition. He added that he was just as proud of the defeats as the victories, since even in losses he gave everything for the shirt.
Highlighting how precious time is, Jakobs said some moments never return, which is why he wants to dedicate more time to himself and his family going forward. He stressed that although his playing journey with Senegal has come to an end, his bond with the country will never be broken. He expressed hope that in the future he can give something back to Senegal beyond the football pitch.
The Senegalese defender had represented his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Jakobs' decision is being seen as the start of a period in which he will focus more intensely on his performances at Galatasaray.
